This chapter is concerned with measurements of fracture growth and geometry. Recent Advances in Hydraulic Fracturing (Gidley et al. 1989) did not contain a separate chapter on fracture mapping; however, the chapter on rock mechanics and fracture geometry in Recent Advances in Hydraulic Fracturing includes a section on temperature logs and introduced radioactive (RA) tracers, downhole cameras, and microseismic mapping. The information on temperature logging is quite complete and is still valid today, but in every other way the technology for mapping fractures has progressed by orders of magnitude. The objective of this chapter is to provide sufficient information for petroleum engineers to assess the practicality and value of these technologies for their well applications.
