Analysis of well performance assumes an unobstructed flow and constant operating conditions. Any downhole and surface changes in the flow system are usually reflected in the production rate, which in turn transforms performance into operating segments. Several examples will illustrate the effects of different conditions.
The well drainage system depends on pressure loss across the drainage sections to overcome the hydrostatic head resisting flow up the wellbore. Therefore, reservoir and operational characteristics affect the shape of the performance decline curve.
Knowledge of reservoir rock and fluid type and expected drive mechanism can be of considerable aid when interpreting a production decline history.
