Abstract

In recent years, new extraction techniques have untapped large volumes of natural gas increasing the supply and reducing the cost for consumers. Gas demand is growing worldwide, as the commodity is used for new applications, such as marine fuels (bunkering). Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is slated to become a primary source of fuel for vessels. LNG as a marine fuel will reduce carbon emissions and bunkering costs. In order to shift to LNG, the maritime industry needs to adapt ship engines, installing cryogenic tanks, and developing new port logistics. Because natural gas is cleaner than other fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, it will play a prominent role in the global transition to a low carbon energy economy. In the next future, LNG will become an efficient and cost-effective fuel for marine transportation.
