Beneath the arid desert and azure seas of Qatar exists the world's third largest reserve of natural gas. This wealth allows Qatar to enjoy the highest gross domestic product per capita in the world. However, in exploiting this wealth, Qatar is also the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter per capita.
It is said that "with great wealth comes great responsibility". Qatar has embraced this responsibility and is dedicated to sustainable development in providing the world with clean energy. One of the country's clean energy leaders is ORYX GTL, the world's largest operating gas-to-liquids facility.
ORYX GTL converts 3.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily into more than 32,000 barrels of GTL diesel, naphtha, and LPG. The GTL process produces extremely high quality transporation fuels and chemical feedstocks. The production and utilization of GTL products results in demonstrably less greenhouse gas formation than its crude oil-derived alternatives. ORYX GTL's efforts in sustainability extend far beyond the production of environmentally friendly hydrocarbon products. The GTL process also results huge quantities of pure water! ORYX GTL uses this produced water internally and in the surrounding area as irrigation water.
In this presentation, the author will discuss:
- –
an overview of the GTL process and explain the synthesis reactions that occur - a environmental impact comparison of GTL to crude oil refining
- –
the qualities of GTL products and how they result in lower GHG emissions
- –
the use of produced water as an alternative to fresh water
- –
how leading-edge technology, such as pyrolysis for waste disposal and green building techniques is being introduced to minimize the environmental footprint of the ORYX GTL plant.
Beneath the arid desert and azure seas of Qatar exists the worlds' third largest reserve of natural gas1. This wealth allows Qatar to enjoy the highest gross domestic product per capita in the world2. In exploiting this wealth however, Qatar is also the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter per capita3.
Bill Gates once said that "with great wealth comes great responsibility". The State of Qatar has embraced this responsibility and is dedicated to sustainable development in providing the world with clean energy.
