Abstract

The influence of loading and environmental conditions on the performance of asphalt pavements is examined, with consideration given to rutting, fracture, fatigue, and influence of air and water. Also discussed is mixture stiffness, which influences stresses and strains occurring in all layers of a paved road.

Theory has been used to define the stresses and strains developed and permit guides for design and construction to be indicated. The influence of the asphalt on mixture properties is also briefly discussed.

Resistance to rutting is discussed, for a variety of loading conditions, in terms of established mix design procedures and triaxial compression tests at loading times and temperatures consistent with expected conditions. Bearing capacity relationships based on values for cohesion (c) and angle of internal friction(0) obtained from triaxial compression tests are also suggested.

Critical conditions for fracture resulting from loading and temperature change are analyzed.

Fatigue criteria are presented, and it is indicated that mixture design to minimize fatigue is dependent on the thickness of the asphalt layer.

To minimize the detrimental effects of air and water, permeability criteria are suggested and proper compaction is emphasized.

A summary table is presented, listing factors and values to be considered in design.

Asphalt concrete pavements are subjected to a variety of loading conditions ranging from stationary to moving, the latter including both accelerating and decelerating as well as uniformly moving traffic. Rsum L'influence des conditions de charge et d'ambiance variables sur les performances des chausses en beton bitumineux est examine. Se considrs sont les ornires, la fissuration, la fatigue, et l'influence de l'air et de l'eau. L'influence de la rigidit du mlange bitumineux sur la rpartition des contraintes et des dformations dans toutes couches d'une chausse revtue est galement examine.

Une approche thoretique est adopte afin de dfinir les contraintes et les dformations et de permettre l'indication des conseils utiles au dessein et la construction des chausses. L'influence du bitume sur les qualits du mlange est aussi discute brivement.

La rsistance l'engendrement des ornires est discute, pour diffrentes conditions de charge, en fonction des procds tablis du dessein de mlange et des essais triaxiaux impliquant des temps de charge et des conditions de temprature analogues aux conditions "in situ." Des capacits pour portant de charge qui sont bases sur des valeurs de la cohsion (c) et de l'angle de frottement interne (q) lors des essais triaxiaux sont galement suggres.
