The suspensoid cracking process, which has been used in commercial operations since 1940, employs relatively small amounts of catalysts in coil-type tubular reactors similar to those used in conventional pyrolytic cracking. The catalysts which are used give improved product quality and, by adsorbing materials which tenld to form coke, enable operations to be conducted at much higher temperatures and pressures than would be possible without them.
The effects of temperature, pressure, reaction time and feed stock boiling-range on the product quality and distribution are generally similar to those observed in pyrolytic cracking. In addition, the catalyst has been shown to be effective in promoting reactions of carbon bond rupture, polymerization, alkylation and hydrogen transfer and in the production of branched-chain paraffins anld aromatics.
The techniques developed for suspensoid cracking should be well suited to other chemical processes which require the use of small quantities of active catalysts in continuous operations.
