The objectives of ADCO's Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC) is to utilize new technology for transmitting data from our rigs to drive new ways of working to optimize the data acquisition and drilling process; identify drilling hazards early and visualize well progress in 3D for interactive decision making in Real Time environment.
Following the completion of the first phase of the project; establishing the capability to transmit data in real time from all ADCO drilling rigs, some benefits are becoming evident. The availability of data and drilling parameters in real time allows the continuous monitoring and fine-tuning of drilling parameters like weight on bit, RPM and pump activity to minimize drill-string shocks and vibrations. Such vibrations can cause the failure of electronics and mechanical components of both Logging While Drilling sensors and Rotary Steerable Systems and result in subsequent non-productive time due to the necessity of unplanned trips to replace the broken down sensor with another tool.
At the same time Real Time Data Transmission allow more accurate well placement using geo-steering techniques that utilize data from mud logs and Logging While Drilling sensors to continuously update 3D Earth Models.
The second phase - which is currently in progress - focuses on defining the IT-infrastructure and software requirements to enhance drilling performance. HR issues related to 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week operation like finding the optimum shift schedule will also be addressed. Balancing experienced contractor and ADCO staff to leverage manpower skills in the RTOC is a key concern. "Intervention Protocols" also have to be agreed to define RTOC authority levels and when to refer to Drilling and Asset Team Management.
The final stage will cover the actual construction of the RTOC to facilitate multidisciplinary decision making by placing Geoscientists, Drilling Staff and Petroleum Engineers in one Integrated Team. The central facility close to decision makers in the Petroleum Engineering and Drilling Divisions will be equipped with workstations and data visualization screens for each rig.
This new way of working is also expected to minimize the footprint on the rig-site and reduce staff exposure to road hazards by reducing personnel trips to well locations. It will also create an exciting, high profile environment for mentoring new intake staff.
