The log analyst today is faced with a multitude of logs which require numerous routine and repetitive calculations. To perform these calculations by hand is time consuming and under certain circumstances becomes uneconomical. Therefore, many log analysts have turned to the computer to relieve them of this burdensome task. However, the use of the large computer requires a certain amount of preparation of the logs before being processed by the computer. Depending on the number and type of logs involved, several days may elapse before the log analyst receives the final results from the computer. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the utilization of a computer system where the log analyst can have accessibility to a computer and be able to process his logs without leaving his office. Through such a system, referred to as computer time sharing, the log analyst is on line with the computer by means of an office control console system unit. This system allows the log analyst to have complete control of the input data, parameter constants and other pertinent data involved. The computer results become available almost immediately after the data is transmitted to the computer, thus allowing the log analyst to monitor the output. The flexibility of this system allows the log analyst to stop the computer, alter any portion of input data or program, and then continue with the computations. The final results from such a system are available in a minimum amount of time. The final output of the computed data can be in both tabular and graphical form.
