ABSTRACT

Temperatures are logged in wells for many reasons; an unusual use of temperature data is for the measurement of the rate of heat flow from the interior of the earth to the surface. For this use, the requirements are stringent: the well must be in approximate thermal equilibrium, core must be available, and temperatures must be measured with precision of about 0.01øC. About 150 measurements of heat flow in the United States are currently underway. Preliminary results are reported.
