Production Logging is that branch of Well Logging concerned with the identification and evaluation of the nature of flow of fluids into and from a wellbore after initial completion. Some of these logs have been widely discussed but equally useful tools have been overlooked. Production logs may be divided into two groups:PART I All logs and devices used to describe the physical conditions in the borehole and adjacent formations. This includes perforations, casing, tubing and cement, etc. PART II All logs and devices used to determine rate, direction, quantity and identity of fluid in and around the borehole. Tools in this group would include flowmeters, tracers, nuclear logs, temperature logs, etc. We must have an understanding of both the capabilities and limitations of production logging tools before we can apply them to reservoir problems. By the proper use of such logs, efficient production methods, reserves, unitization, water flooding and injection studies, and all workover problems can be greatly facilitated.
