ABSTRACT

NML measurements are made possible by the paramagnetic properties of formation fluids. The NML gives two measurements:

  1. free fluid index which is a measure of the fluid content of a formation and

  2. thermal relaxation characteristics which distinguishes oil and water.

NML has been used in the field to

  1. show porosity in fractured shale,

  2. show fluid zones in cemented sands,

  3. distinguish oil zones from water zones in fresh water sands, and

  4. locate fluid zones and define oil productive intervals in shaly sands.

The drilling mud program should be controlled to produce long filtrate relaxation times.
