Pollution Prevention (referred to as "P2" by EPA) focuses heavily on source reduction and is viewed as the preferred approach for minimizing waste now and into the future. Minimizing waste through source reduction, product substitution, and product reuse, is a "proactive" approach "upstream" of what classically has been handled "downstream" as waste disposal challenges. Establishing open working relationships between various departments within a business unit is time and money well spent when compared to that involved with waste characterization and disposal in a more "reactive" mode.

Working in remote industrial settings with optimized staffing levels, such as the oilfields located along the Arctic Ocean (the "North Slope"), "P2" challenges business units to further develop and foster integrated methods and systems for recognition and management of waste reduction opportunities.
