ABSTRACT
It is now considered that extraction of energy and fluid from a hot water aquifer underlying the city of Rotorua, New Zealand, is adversely affecting the surface geothermal features in the neighboring Whaka-rewarewa Tourist Reserve. In this paper, we look at the spectrum of data available that may provide us with background information about this system. An analysis of this data enables us to establish a conceptual model of the total Rotorua-Whakarewarewa geothermal reservoir. This may help in the setting up of a management plan that will permit the continuing extraction of energy by residents while giving some degree of protection to the features in the Tourist Reserve.
