The introduction of new polymers such as partially hydrolized polyacrylamides (PHPA) and sulfonated acrylates has led to the development of a clay-free DAP/Polymer system. The DAP/Polymer system can be used in place of KCL/Polymer in the Rockies to achieve nearly the same shale stability and has some distinct advantages as compared to KCL/Polymer muds:

  1. DAP muds are more enviornmentally acceptable.

  2. DAP muds are less corrosive.

  3. DAP muds have resistivities nearer to fresh water, facilitating log interpretation in some instances.
