Artificial lift is becoming increasingly important to the economical production of deep, high water-cut production fluids. As manufacturers extend the operating life of pumps and motors, improved performance is required of ESP cables. This is particularly true in hot, sour wells with high concentrations of H2S gas.

This paper describes a new ESP cable specifically designed to operate in the severest hot, high pressure, high H2S environments. The mechanisms by which high concentrations of H2S attack pump cable are explored. How new cable technology can extend cable life in H2S environments is explained. Actual field results in a 20% H2S well are discussed and related to cable design theory.
