The deposition of calcium carbonate and/or barium sulfate scale on submersible pumps is the most serious production problem in the Rangely Weber Sand Unit. The conventional method of flushing scale and corrosion inhibitors continuously down the annulus is effective from the pump intake up, but offers no protection to the seal and motor. In an effort to protect the entire pump assembly, Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (CUSA) banded a string of 3/4″ continuous coil tubing to the outside of the production tubing along with the power cable so that chemicals could be injected below the pump. The original installation was a success, and at present there are approximately 30 such installations in Rangely.
