With the use of a microscope equipped with polarization and fluorescence, and simple laboratory techniques, the presence of and/or contamination by cementing additives can be confirmed in field-blended cementing compositions. The initial learning process involved in this procedure is observing and learning the appearance of neat cements and the various additives using plain, polarized and fluorescence light microscopy. When individual characteristics such as color, sixe, shape and texture of each additive are noted, these can easily and euickly be qualitated when viewed under the microscope, whether they are present as the only additive in a blend or with various other additives.
