Laboratory tests were performed on specimens of sandstones, shales, siltstones and mudstones from thirty horizons in the Piceance Basin in support of the DOE Western Gas Sands Project Multi-Well Experiment. The objective of these tests was to determine tensile strength, compressive strength and elastic constants. Data obtained show that these properties vary substantially from horizon to horizon, and do not correlate well with either lithology or depth.
