Austenitic Stainless steel UNS S31600 is used for instrumentation items on topside production facilities worldwide. Stress corrosion cracking and chloride pitting have caused failures of such items and solutions to prevent leaks and material failures must be found. This paper will detail inspection results, failure analysis, including measurement of stress and strain induced by tapered fittings and make recommendations for material selection and remedial actions.
