Abstract
It is proposed that drilling operations be characterized in four ways. First, each individual drilling operation is characterized by the current rig activity. Second, the phase of drilling is assigned to one or more drilling operations. Third, some drilling operations may also be characterized as belonging to a problematic operations group. Finally, every drilling operation belongs to some scope of work group.
These four fundamental characterizations of drilling operations are unified using the relational database model.
Details of the implementation of this approach are provided. In addition, the approach is compared to several alternatives.
