Production of gas and oil from the fine grained, low permeability Upper Devonian rocks of the Appalachian Basin depends on connecting with natural fractures. In an attempt to correlate these productive zones with surface features a correlation has been observed between subsurface fracturing intensity, as observed from Borehole Television Camera surveys, and surface lineament density. The digitizing, calculating and density contouring of these surface lineaments can now be done with reasonably priced commercial software and a personal computer. The utile nature of this system is that it gives exploration departments a quick look at possible fracture-enhanced areas of production without the tedious and time consuming process of generating the statistics and maps by hand.
