A personal computer with commercially available software was utilized in the planning and drilling of a 2,000 foot horizontal well drilled in the Devonian Shale in Wayne County, West Virginia. Planning procedures, well design and simulations of drilling operations were conducted with the software to identify potential problems and determine the size of rig required for the operation. Drilling progress was monitored with the computer as well as costs of drilling operations. Utilization of the computer was a key factor contributing to the successful drilling operations.
