Abstract

While cost-reduction has always been an important aspect of any petroleum venture, smaller reserves and lower flow rates have made such considerations vital. A new model called VERTEX is presently being developed to suit this need. VERTEX uses the (boundary) integral equation method to easily but accurately model major natural and man-made well and reservoir characteristics. In particular, hydraulic fractures, horizontal wells, gravel packs, major lateral heterogeneity and irregular reservoir shapes. In this paper, we set out the principles for the mathematical treatment of the subject. WE solution presented in the SPE literature for hydraulically fractured wills. The paper discusses future application for multi-well field development considering hydraulic fracturing horizontal well or infill and extension drilling.
