This paper describes the evolution of a slim-hole directional and horizontal drilling program in the Permian basin. The development and application of small-diameter roller cone bits has played an important role in the success of this program. The integration of these bits with specialized motors and fluid systems, has produced optimal well profiles which will be presented and analyzed. Case studies of Marathon wells showing significant per footage cost reductions, increased footage/penetration rate per bit and increased displacement will be presented.
