Biological liquid/solids treatment (LST) processes can be an economical treatment alternative for meeting treatment and disposal requirements for tank bottoms and other petroleum oily sludges. The major factors affecting the choice of this alternative relate to: a) the characteristics of the sludges requiring treatment, b) the process operating conditions, c) the fundamentals of biological treatment as applied to these wastes, d) air emissions from the process, and e) the characteristics of the treated residues that require disposal. This paper a) discusses the fundamentals of biological treatment that affect use of this process with petroleum oily sludges, b) describes the analytical parameters used to evaluate biological treatment processes, and c) illustrates the application of the process for such sludges.
