A new method for interpreting radioactive tracer injection profiles has been developed for use after the tracer has entered the formation. Equations for obtaining fluid injection rates for radial flow and for obtaining in-situ fracture apertures for linear flow are presented. From a Monte Carlo study of gamma ray transport, it was found that the wellbore gamma ray intensity decayed exponentially with radioactive tracer distance into the formation. The attenuation of gamma rays reaching a centralized detector is independent of wellbore diameter. An equation for the dependence of the attenuation on formation bulk density and initial gamma ray energy was developed.
