A high success rate of water reduction has been documented in 21 plugback jobs performed on gravel packed wells in the Gulf of Mexico. This electric wireline plugback method was first introduced by Carroll and Bullen1  (SPE 18228) at the 1988 SPE Technical Conference in Houston. The plugback method is unique in that it is performed within gravel pack assemblies and utilizes plastic instead of cement.

This paper is a case study on actual field results for the 21 jobs performed by Tenneco/Chevron since the introduction of this method.
