This paper describes the experience of working with over a dozen companies in the design and implementation of a web-based field data collection system. Daily well, tank, and meter readings are entered in the field using a handheld computer in place of paper gauge sheets. The data is transmitted electronically to a database server on the Internet. A touch-tone telephone offers an alternative means for data entry. Users can display and plot the data using a PC application that accesses the data across the Internet.

This paper will review the experience gained in the following areas:

  • Field operations and system design

  • Hardware durability in the field

  • Interfaces for pumpers

  • Alternative data entry systems

  • Communications in rural areas

  • Internet database and engineering applications

  • Training and support

  • Cost-benefit analysis
