Abstract
This paper describes the experience of working with over a dozen companies in the design and implementation of a web-based field data collection system. Daily well, tank, and meter readings are entered in the field using a handheld computer in place of paper gauge sheets. The data is transmitted electronically to a database server on the Internet. A touch-tone telephone offers an alternative means for data entry. Users can display and plot the data using a PC application that accesses the data across the Internet.
This paper will review the experience gained in the following areas:
Field operations and system design
Hardware durability in the field
Interfaces for pumpers
Alternative data entry systems
Communications in rural areas
Internet database and engineering applications
Training and support
Cost-benefit analysis
