Although amazingly simple in concept, the downhole orbital vibrator is assuming an important and growing role in wellbore applications that include subsurface diagnostic and imaging concepts. The vibrator was first intended as part of a low-frequency shear-wave logging tool. It quickly found a more important application as a dowhole seismic source for crosswell imaging. It is now being investigated as the basis for new logging concepts for the in situ measurement of important rock properties including fractures.
