Abstract
Petroleum Development Oman aspires to utilize the available renewable energy resources to produce steam for the Enhanced Oil Recovery operation in Amal oil field. The aim is to reduce the greenhouse gasses emitted from the current conventional steam production plants as well as reduce the dependency on natural gas for the process of generating steam. The paper also evaluates different types of renewable energy technologies against various value drivers in order to determine the optimum fit for purpose technologies that can be used for steam generation. In addition, it sheds light on the area selection process intended to host the proposed technologies. Finally, the paper discusses some of the operational challenges associated with the identified renewable energy technologies as well as states how such concepts can be further developed until realization.
