This paper describes the development of a chemical steam additive to enhance thermal recovery of heavy oil. When applied, the chemical additive is carried along with the steam to the reservoir. In the reservoir, the chemical enhances production by increasing mobilization of the oil and enabling condensed water to carry a higher loading of oil. A lab-based coreflood setup was created to simulate the thermal recovery process by passing pressurized steam over an unconsolidated oilsand core sample. These lab-based test results establish the effectiveness of this steam additive to enhance heavy oil production at a dosage rate as low as 100 parts per million (PPM).
