Abstract

The effluent treatment plant (ETP) at Lakwa oil field (India), generate huge amount of sludge containing about 7–10 % hydrocarbon. Disposal of the sludge with the high hydrocarbon content is of environmental concern. The possibility of combating the problem through total utilization of the sludge in making building brick and light weight aggregate has been investigated. This communication highlights the result of preliminary investigation. Common masonry brick and light weight aggregate with acceptable physical and chemical properties could be prepared using about 34 % as received sludge.
