And so "building" a Safety Management System (SMS) for the organization will focus peoples’ energies on safe work practices, right? OK then - combine effective management of the system and the work place becomes safe, right? Getting closer granted, but why do incidents continue to happen despite elaborate and sophisticated systems in place to keep everyone safe and out of harms way? Perhaps there needs to be a refocus on people - the actual drivers of the system. Alas, close attention to how people behave, their actions, and inaction. Attention in the form of Observing! It seems that too many systems today are driving the actions of people instead of peoples’ action determining system direction. START is a process which produces positive results in peoples’ behavior through observations and positive feedback. It changes an organization's culture by changing peoples’ hearts.
