Fouling of centrifugal compressors can dramatically reduce the gas throughput of a production platform. Deposition of solids within compressor internals has reduced flow and, in extreme circumstances, resulted in total seizure. Substances deposited include iron carbonate and salt.

The fouling can affect the ability to meet gas sales agreements with potentially severe financial penalties. Significant operating expense is also incurred to remove fouling material.

A mix of proven and innovative fouling control techniques has been applied including; well management, process modifications, selective use of corrosion inhibitor, internal coating of the compressor internals and on-line water wash systems.
