A joint industry project (JIP) has been conducted to investigate the behaviour and limitations of coiled tubing (CT) in a horizontal well environment. Full scale testing (FST) revealed limitations in traditionally accepted industry theories and changes have been implemented in field operating procedures. Residual bending in the CT, tip (end) load, and well profile are critical parameters with regards to maximising coiled tubing penetration into a well. Computer models have traditionally predicted significantly less penetration in these wells. However, recent testing and field experience has confirmed extensions to these predictions. This paper describes the JIP and presents the main results and conclusions, including some reference to recent field examples.
