A campaign in the North Sea was carried out to permanently abandon 24 wells using coiled tubing (CT). This was used to fulfil the Department of Energy requirement that the production screens had to be plugged back with cement prior to the removal of any well completions. A review of the advantages of using CT and the operational difficulties experienced during the placement of the cement are presented. A financial comparison with present day abandonments, using a rig for the entire operation, is also presented.
