Abstract
For several fundamental reasons such as growing economical constraints, decreasing size of discoveries, deeper-water exploration, improvement of subsea technology, the trend for future offshore developments has recently been very much in favour of the floating-production facility concept.
This type of development has been for several years successfully implemented in various parts of the world where weather conditions are favourable, for both early-and permanent-production applications (Brazil, Mediterranean Sea etc….).
So far in a more hostile environment such as the North Sea, only two producing fields have been developed using this approach : Argyll (1975), Buchan (1980).
