This paper discusses the measured vortex-induced vibration (VIV) responses of faired drilling riser models and predictions from computer codes. Experimental data indicated that tail fairings are very effective at suppressing VIV of drilling risers. Comparisons are made among the test results, predicted responses from the calibrated model, and the calculations from an un-calibrated model. Examples are given that clearly demonstrate the importance of testing and computational model calibration.
