Working since 1983 Weyerhaeuser through biotechnology research has developed a new form of cellulose with an intertwined reticulated structure. This cellulose, produced from bacteria, has unique properties and functionalities unlike other conventional celluloses. When added to aqueous systems, the Reticulated Bacterial Cellulose (RBC) dramatically improves fluid rheology and particle suspension over a wide range of conditions. Extensive laboratory and pilot equipment testing has been done using RBC as an additive to a variety of fracture fluids and to a limited extent, drilling fluids. The test results show advantages in fluid performance and significant economic benefits by the addition of RBC.
