The injection of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery causes profound changes in reservoir brine chemistry. These changes directly impact on a downhole scale control program and in some cases may require new products to effectively control scale formation. Evaluation techniques are presented for scale inhibitors to be used in carbon dioxide floods. The results of tests on current inhibitor molecules are discussed as well as the development and evaluation of specialized polymers for scale inhibition in low pH environments.
