At the request of Saudi Aramco, Chevron Oil Field Research Company digitally processed 40 images acquired by the Landsat thematic mapper system and several images acquired by the SPOT panchromatic system. The images were geologically interpreted to aid Saudi Aramco's exploration program in the region beyond the "Retained Areas" of existing production.

Image processing routines are grouped in the following major categories:

  1. Image Restoration – correct for errors, noise, and distortions introduced while data are acquired, transmitted, and recorded.

  2. Image Enhancement – modify impact of the image on the interpreter in order to improve the expression of geologic features.

  3. Information Extraction – recognize and display specific geologic attributes of images.

Each processing category includes a number of programs that are employed in various combinations to produce images. The resulting images contributed significantly to Saudi Aramco's successful exploration program.
