Horizontal wells with multi-stage fracturing are typically used in shale gas plays for them to become economically feasible to produce gas. Two distinct types of challenges are faced while drilling horizontal wells in shale, first type is wellbore instability potentially leading to stuck pipe incidents in the build section, and the second type is loss circulation, potentially compromising well integrity in the lateral section. This paper presents a workflow on handling these challenges effectively by integrating geomechanics with efficient drilling practices.
