New technology for transferring downhole data to the surface during drilling operations gives new possibilities for identifying reservoir parameters. More accurate data and higher data transfer rates from the drill bit will be available. In addition, new sensors might be introduced between the drill bit and the surface. Data from these sensors can be transmitted on-line to the surface.

When using a detailed dynamic model of the well and reservoir, the model can be calibrated using available real-time measurements. Improving the data transfer methodology provides measurements with higher accuracy. There are also possibilities of placing sensors along the drill string and incorporate these measurements into the model.

This paper evaluates methods for performing on-line reservoir characterization using available instrumentation. In addition, new sensor positions along the drillstring and along the casing are introduced and evaluated with respect to improvement of reservoir characterization.
