Abstract
This paper is based on the field application of competency systems within an oilfield service company. It defines competency systems, reviews and summarizes literature on Competency Systems, and demonstrates the shift from traditional classroom training to a competency based approach within the service sector of the petroleum industry.
The paper defines the need for knowledge, skills, behaviors, and experience necessary for an individual to achieve competence and explains the method by which people can achieve competence.
The paper also discusses the five essential elements and the advantages and limitations of a competency based training and development system.
