The need to drill wells quickly and efficiently has challenged traditional thinking for solids control equipment, disposal services and fluids management practices in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) drilling operations. Effective control of drilled solids and proper waste treatment are combined into an integrated fluids management program to address the challenges. Simultaneously, proper management of drilling wastes to meet more stringent environmental compliance must be addressed and coordinated amongst all parties.

Current practices address these needs, but have evolved in tandem with other aspects of drilling operations to suit the particulars of SAGD operations. Today's practices will also evolve as technologies advance; the evaluative philosophy and proper project management however remain an integral part of the process itself, and naturally foster future improvements which in-turn reduce risk both financially and environmentally.
