This paper presents the results of a reservoir performance study for horizontal and vertical Bakken wells in the "Fairway" of the Williston Basin. A combination of forecasting methods were utilized, including decline curve analysis, material balance, analytical solutions, and empirical correlations.

The results indicate that recoverable reserves from horizontal wells in the "Fairway" are 2.5 to 3.0 times a vertical well for 1.5 to 2.0 times the cost. Simple theoretical calculations combined with field data are useful in making initial estimates of original oil in place, recoverable reserves, and drainage area.
