This paper gives the experimental results about the relations between velocity, amplitude, and dominant frequency of compressional head wave and gas saturation. The head wave amplitude is an important indicator of gas - bearing formation beause it is more sensitive to gas saturation than its velocity and dominant frequens Discussion of the methodology of using amplitude (energy) attenuation to detect gas-bearing formation is presented and evaluation of the characteristics, effectiveness, influencing factors, and problems of this method is made in the light of its application in 30 wells in Huabei, Sichuan and Zhongyuan oil fields.
