Amoco recently deployed a Metocean buoy, a directional waverider buoy, four Aandera current meters on a mooring and two upward-looking acoustic Doppler current profilers in the Pearl River Basin Block 29/04 in the South China Sea· This paper describes objectives of the measurement program, planning of instrumentation, deployment, and recovery operations, and oceanography features being investigated.

Measuring instruments were installed in August 1987 and good data were collected successfully during several typhoons. Samples of wind, waves, and current data are presented. Of particular interest are the current velocity profiles resulting from large scale oceanic circulation, a local eddy feature, monsoons, and typhoons. The data will be used to determine operational and extreme environmental loading criteria for offshore planning and design.
