An equation of formation deviating force has been developed based on drillability anisotropy of formation. It can be used to simplify the calculation of deviation control by a pendulum drill string, to determine the formation anisotropy index and to analyze quantitatively the total deviation force acting on the bit in combination with drill string mechanics. A sample calculation of deviation control by a pendulum drill string with a specified length is also presented. A number of field tests have demonstrated satisfactory results.
