A review of how surfactant molecular structure affects those properties which determine micellar process performance is presented. Surfactants for both low and high salinity applications are considered. Those factors which contribute to the formation of polysulfonated petroleum sulfonates are discussed. A variety of approaches to formulation of synthetic sulfonates are contrasted, and the important factors of molecular structure are delineated. Finally, several approaches for application in high salinity/hardness reservoirs are described.
